Introduction to Using Instant Gratification for Goals
Here is how I use instant gratification to help me work towards my goals. So basically, if there's something I want to do and I'm finding it a struggle to do the thing, I will often tie some kind of reward to myself as a reward for doing the thing.
Potential Risks of Extrinsic Motivation According to Studies
Now, this is bad practice, right? There are some studies that show that if you extrinsically motivate yourself with like candy and snacks and treats and stuff to do something, that has the risk of drowning out the intrinsic motivation that you feel for the craft itself.
Personal Approach and Ignoring the Studies
In my case, I choose to ignore those studies because I find if for example I am struggling to get started with like filming a video, struggling to find the motivation to go for a run, I will often say to myself, hey, let me go for the run first and then I'll treat myself to playing a little bit of Hogwarts Legacy on the Steam Deck afterwards or something like that.
Legitimacy and Theoretical Benefits of the Method
And you know, this is actually somewhat legit. The idea is that if you playing video games or like scrolling Tik Tok or whatever is like low-effort dopamine, like you don't really have to work for it. You just get the dopamine automatically. And so if you do something painful or difficult first and then give yourself the dopamine kind of as a reward for the painful thing, then theoretically it trains your brain to actually enjoy doing the hard stuff rather than to just default to the easy stuff.
Conclusion on Personal Use of Instant Gratification
So, that's how I personally use instant gratification as a way of helping me achieve my goals.
